Connecticut Staple and Southington Energy Innovator Taking Recycling to New Heights
Bristol/Southington, CT – North America’s oldest continuously operating amusement park and Connecticut’s first food-waste-to-energy facility are joining forces to create a more sustainable future. As a part of its expanding recycling program, Lake Compounce has agreed to bring food waste generated by the park to Quantum Biopower’s facility.
Slated to open later this year, the Southington facility’s anaerobic digestion process will turn organic material, like the food remains from Lake Compounce, into renewable energy, which can be used to generate electricity, heat or natural gas.
“The pairing of North America’s oldest operating amusement park and the first food waste energy facility in the state is a unique and exciting one,” said Brian Paganini, Vice President & Managing Director at Quantum. “We’re proud to be working with Lake Compounce as they look to the future by diverting their food waste and creating enough energy to power even the largest roller coaster”.
Roller coasters just like Phobia Phear, Lake Compounce’s newest electro-magnet powered thrill ride. Phobia, the first triple launch coaster in New England, features the tallest inversion in the northeast. Standing 15 stories high, Phobia takes riders upside down and backwards at speeds of up to 65 mph through a cobra roll inversion 150 feet in the air.
Quantum’s partnerships with organizations like Lake Compounce are key to a more sustainable Connecticut. The recycling facility is a critical piece of infrastructure for the state’s broader plan to divert 60% of food waste from the waste stream by the year 2024.
