Southington recycler Quantum Biopower has received approval from the Southington Planning & Zoning committee to put Connecticut's first food recycling and anaerobic digestion facility on 65 acres in the town.

If all goes according to plan, local supermarkets, hotels and other businesses could be utilizing a waste-to-energy service approved by the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission last week to occupy the area alongside the mulch operation by December.

A new law went into effect January 1 requiring certain businesses to start recycling their food waste. According to the state, the legislation is aimed at gradually bringing more composting facilities to Connecticut.
